On May 17, 1890, Jo van Gogh-Bonger met Vincent van Gogh for the first time in Paris. He was surprised to see that van Gogh looked healthy and strong, unlike the image he had imagined after hearing that van Gogh was ill. Jo recalled that of all his self-portraits, this painting was the one that most closely resembled his impression of van Gogh at that time.
Van Gogh painted this painting in Paris before moving to Arles in the south of France. In a letter to his sister, he wrote about the self-portrait he left with Theo. He described his own expression as "a pinkish-gray face" that was "lifeless and stiff, with a red beard and a sad look."
We invite you to actually come to the exhibition and see this self-portrait to find out what impression you get from it. In any case, this self-portrait, painted towards the end of his two years in Paris, is undoubtedly the culmination of his work. Please also pay attention to the brushwork he learned in Paris and the rich color expression that effectively uses complementary colors.
